Types of Detox Programs and Centers

Detox facilityThe general purpose of detoxification is to get someone safely withdrawn from the immediate effects of a toxic substance such as alcohol or other drugs. There are several different ways and settings in which this can be accomplished, but did you also know that there are actually different definitions for detox as well?

Detox specialistsMost detox procedures are simply designed to sober someone up so they are no longer under the influence of that substance. This does not mean, though, that their body is fully detoxed. Did you know that toxic residues actually store in the tissue of a person's body and can stay there for many months or even years after a typical detox is completed? Despite there being no detectable amounts of the drug in their blood or urine, these residues accumulate in the fatty tissue of the body and can continue to cause negative reactions to the person including pysical cravings for more drugs, ups and downs in behavior or mood swings, fatigue and impaired mental ability. The only known method of safely and rapidly removing these residues is through something called a biophysical detox program.

hospital detox clinicsDetox procedures are done in a variety of settings. The first and most common setting is a drug-free residential withdrawal program. A medical detox program is done at a specialized facility or hospital due to the administration of tapering drugs being overseen by a doctor and other medical professionals. There is also something called an ambulatory detox, which is an outpatient withdrawal program where people are typically weaned down slowly over a longer period of time.

A word of caution to opiate useres: there has been a big push to put opiate addicts (heroin, prescription painkillers, etc.) onto an opioid substitute called buprenorphine, which comes in the form of Suboxone or Subutex. This is only designed initially to help reduce the immediate withdrawal symptoms to be used over just a few short days. Since then the makers of this drug have pushed to get doctors to prescribe it over a longer-period of time, such as many weeks or a few months. This is usually not necessary and in fact works against the purpose because the drugs have their own potential for abuse and dependency, which was proven to have been known by early clinical trial evidence and now easily observed among street drug populations.
