Common Drugs of Abuse
Alcohol is the most prevalent of all drugs and despite its
legality can also be one of the most dangerous drugs to withdraw from.
Extremely heavy amounts of alcohol consumption over a long period of time can
actually cause deadly siezures if suddenly stopped. While this is not usually
the case, it is best to consult with a detox professional to find out whether
or not a medical detox is necessary or if it can be done in a regular
residential setting.
Opiates such as heroin, methadone,
buprenorphine and prescription narcotic painkillers like
hydrocodone and oxycodone generally have pretty severe withdrawal
symptoms. These can include aches, pains, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, shakes,
cold sweats, sleeplessness and more. The fear of these withdrawal symptoms can
alone be enough to keep them using the drugs. However, there are extremely
effective ways to help withdraw someone from the less severe forms of opiates
and lower dosages, and on the other side, there are successful detox centers
that can step someone down much more comfortably before going through a
residential rehabilitation center. Detoxing from methadone can be most
difficult, but we can help you find a facility that specializes in getting
someone off high levels safely.
Prescription drugs
other than painkillers can also have very severe withdrawal symptoms. Drugs
like benzodiazepines (benzos) such as Xanax,
Ativan, Librium, Klonopin and Valium can be very
difficult to detox from and should be properly weaned down or detoxed in a
medical setting. There are other prescription drugs that millions of people are
now trying to get off of that have unwanted side effects and heavy withdrawal
symptoms. These include antidepressant drugs and antipsychotic drugs that are
often prescribed for depression, anxiety and so-called bipolar disorder.
Stimulants such as
cocaine, crack, methamphetamine and other forms of
amphetamine or speed generally do not require a medical detox as they
are not life-threatening withdrawal symptoms. In fact, sometimes the best thing
for a person withdrawing from one of these drugs is good sleep, a lot of food,
and healthy supplements to assist in repairing the damage caused to their
body.
